Assalamû'aleykûm wa rahmatûLah wa barakatuh wa maghfiratuh wa ridwanuh

Allâhumma salli wa sallim wa barek 'ala lHabib alMûstafa wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa salem taslima.

QUESTION: How are Ahl al-Bayt, the Prophetic Household, relevant for the average modern Muslim, who goes to jumua sometimes, who hears of Ahl al-Bayt and their virtues but wonders how their lives and experiences are relevant to them?

    ANSWER:

    (1) Love.

Loving them is a huge act of worship, and it is very closely tied to love of the Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, which is the entire heart of the faith, without which one's deen is a corpse.

People will probably talk about the importance of their example, etc, which is true, but even without that, just the single act of loving them is relevant and is huge.

    (2) Karbala.

Anyone who reflects on the events of Karbala gets deep insight into the nature of this world, of the next life, of evil, of tawhid.

Because you could barely come up with a more "disastrous," more "evil" event than the utter massacre of so many of the nearest and dearest of the household of the best of all creation, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, including children. And you could hardly come up with a more in-your-face example of "the bad guys winning." On the surface that is. But that's just it: the surface is very different than the inner reality. And I don't think I can come up with an incident in history that demonstrates that more emphatically than Karbala.

    (3) Tawhid.

When the Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, went to defend tawhid against the Christians of Najran, he chose to bring four other representatives of tawhid with him. They were our masters Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, alayhimu l-salam.

The Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, does not act by accident. If these four are the ones he is taking as the representatives and defenders of tawhid, then they have a special representation and special connection to Allah's oneness. And connection to them increases our connection to that oneness.

What is especially amazing is that our master Hasan was a toddler at that time, and our master Husayn was an infant. Alayhima l-salam.

    سبحانك يا رب

    (4) Spirituality.

It is not an accident that the foremost imams of the Sufi paths are all Ahl al-Bayt. If someone wants to advance in his tasawwuf, let him strengthen his connection to the Sadah, the Household. And may they take you and us by the hand.

بجاه جدهم صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم

    (5) End Times.

Connection to the Household is especially critical toward the end of time. They are like Noah's ark. Be on board with them and be saved. Abandon them and drown. It is not an accident that the Mahdi is a descendent of the Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.

The trials at the end of time will shake people to their core. The stronger your allegiance to the Household, the easier will be your allegiance to the Mahdi when the time comes. If that connection is weak, then a person might not melt in love and reverence for the descendent of Rasul Allah, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, and a person might struggle to follow him. And if someone does not follow the Mahdi, then who is left to follow.

Lord protect us and connect us unbreakably to the Household of the best of creation, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.

    (6) Fidelity.

Maybe this one should have been listed first. Fidelity to Rasul Allah, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam: we *owe* it to him to have the utmost affection toward his family.

Every blessing we have has come to us through Rasul Allah, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, and how could we ever repay him a speck for what he has given us? And yet Allah has told us how we can give something when He commanded the Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, in the Verse of Affection:

"Say: I do not ask of you any compensation for it except *affection for the relatives*."

Affection toward the family of the Prophet, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, is the way that the Lord of all the worlds has instructed to "give back" to Rasul Allah, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.

    (7) Endurance.

When you look at what the Household has endured--especially at Karbala--and continues to endure, it makes you realize what immense loads they have carried, and it helps you patiently endure the burdens you bear.

Especially if there are people with a "my life sucks" attitude, let them look at the brutally hard lives of the Household. It is a powerful reminder.

These are a few points of relevance to average Muslims (and everyone) that came to mind. I'm confident that there are many more.

And Allah and His Messenger know better, salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.

As-salam `alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

    BarakAllahu fiki Selma .

The ahl-ul-bayt (`alayhum salam) had to endure many trials.

On the one hand of those who hated them (nawasib) and also of some misguided who claimed to be of their party and claiming to love them (rawafid).

May Allah guide us and guide them to what is right, strengthen our love for ahl ul bayt and preserve the descendants of ahl ul bayt from misguidance.
