Who will drink first on the Day of Judgement ?

    Hadiths Quoted:

On the authority of Thauban (ra), that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“Inni labi‘uqri haudi adhudu an-nasa li ahlil-Yamani adribu bi‘asaya hatta yarfadda ‘alaihim”.

“Indeed, I will surely be at the centre of my Basin (Haud) pushing back people for the people of Yemen. I will strike away from it with my staff until it pours upon them (i.e. the people of Yemen)”.

He [ﷺ] was asked about its breadth. He [ﷺ] said, “From this place of mine (Madinah) to ‘Amman”.

And he [saw] was asked about its drink and he [ﷺ] said, “It is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. There would spout into it two streamlets from Paradise. One of them is from gold and the other one is from silver”.

Why is it called Yemen ?

    Hadiths Quoted:

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra) who said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Pride and arrogance are characteristics of the rural Bedouins, while calmness is found among the owners of sheep.

“Wal Imanu Yamanin wal Hikmatu Yamaniyah”.

Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is (also) Yemeni.”’

[Abu ‘Abdullah (Al-Bukhari) said, ‘Yemen was called so because it is situated to the right of the Ka‘bah (yaminul Ka‘bah) and Sham was called so because it is situated to the left of the Ka‘bah (shimalul Ka‘bah)’.]

Mawlana `Ali ibn Abi Talib (RadhiAllahu `anhu)

mission in Yemen to spread and preach Islam

    *

Expedition of Ali ibn Abi Talib (Hamdan)

Expedition of Ali ibn Abi Talib,[1] to convert the people of Yemen to Islam, took place in 10AH or 631 AD.[2]

    Military Expedition

According to Ar-Rahīq al-Makhtum (the Sealed Nectar), a modern Islamic hagiography of Muhammad written by the Indian Muslim author Saif ur-Rahman Mubarakpuri, Khalid ibn al-Walid was appointed with the people of Hamdan to call them to Islam. He stayed with them for 6 months but they did not convert. Then Muhammad dispatched Ali ibn Abi Talib and Khalid came back to Muhammad. Ali called them to embrace Islam (and communicated a message from Muhammad to them), and they responded and embraced Islam. Ali then wrote to Muhammad about his success, to which Muhammad replied "Peace be upon Hamdan, Peace be upon Hamdan". Khalid ibn al-Walid was not able to convert the people of Hamdan in 6 months,[3] but Ali reportedly managed to convert all the people of Hamdan in 1 day.[4]

    Islamic Primary sources

The event is mentioned by the Muslim jurist Tabari, he wrote:

al-Bara b. Azib: The Messenger of God sent Khalid b. al-Walid to the people of the Yemen inviting them to Islam, and I was among those who went with him. He persisted in the matter for six months, but they did not respond, so the Messenger of God sent 'Ali b. Abi Talib and ordered him that Khalid and those who were with him should return, but if any of them would like to follow him he should allow them. Al-Bara' said, "I was one who followed 'Ali, and as we reached the borders of the Yemen the people got the news. They gathered around him and 'Ali led us in the morning prayer. When he had finished [the prayer], he lined us up in one row. Then he moved before us, praised and extolled God, then read to them the letter of the Messenger of God. All of Hamdan embraced Islam in one day, and he wrote to the Messenger of God about it. When the Prophet read 'Ali's letter he fell down, prostrating himself to God. Then he sat up and said, 'Peace be upon Hamdan, Peace be upon Hamdan' [After the conversion of Hamdan] the people of the Yemen followed in succession with their acceptance of Islam.

The Expedition Of Ali ibn Abi Talib To Hamdan

By Discover The Truth • March 19, 2016

Ali Ibn Abi Talib was sent to preach the message of Islam to the people of Hamdan. Inviting them to embrace Islam if they were convinced with the Message.

    Report

    Tabari:

“The Messenger of God sent Khalid b. al-Walid to the people of the Yemen inviting them to Islam, and I was among those who went with him. He persisted in the matter for six months, but they did not respond, so the Messenger of God sent Ali b. Abi Talib and ordered him that Khalid and those who were with him should return, but if any of them would like to follow him he should allow them. Al-Bara said, ‘I was one who followed Ali, and as we reached the borders of the Yemen the people got the news. They gathered around him and Ali led us in the Morning Prayer. When he had finished [the prayer], he lined us up in one row. Then he moved before us, praised and extolled God, and then read to them the letter of the Messenger of God. All of Hamdan embraced Islam in one day, and he wrote to the Messenger of God about it. When the Prophet read Ali’s letter he fell down, prostrating himself to God. Then he sat up and said, ‘Peace be upon Hamdan, peace be upon Hamdan!’ [After the conversion of Hamdan] the people of the Yemen followed in succession with their acceptance of Islam.’” [1]

    Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri:

    “HAMDAN DELEGATION:

The arrival of this delegation was in the ninth year of Al-Hijra after the Messenger’s return from Tabuk. So the Messenger of Allah (p) gave them a pledge to guarantee the fulfilment of their demands. He sent to them Malik bin An Namt as their chief, and appointed him as an agent on those of his people who embraced Islam. Khalid bin Al-Waleed was appointed for them all with a purpose of calling them to Islam. HE STAYED WITH THEM FOR SIX MONTHS CALLING TO ISLAM BUT NO ONE RESPONDED TO HIS CALL. Later on Ali bin Abi Talib was dispatched there and Khalid was ordered to come back. UPON ARRIVING AT HAMDAN, ALI COMMUNICATED TO THEM A MESSAGE FROM THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH (P) AND CALLED THEM TO ISLAM. They responded to the call and became Muslims. Ali wrote to the Messenger of Allah (p) of the good tidings. The Messenger of Allah (p) was briefed on the content of that letter, so he prostrated, then raised his head up and said: ‘peace be upon you Hamdan. Peace be upon you Hamdan.’” [2]

Expedition Of Ali Ibn Abi Talib To Yemen

    (Mudhij or Madhij)

    By
    Discover The Truth • March 19, 2016

Ali Ibn Abi talib was sent to Yemen (Mudhij or Madhij) to preach the message of Islam. To do missionary work. Some have claimed that Ali (ra) sole mission was to reduce and or force non-Muslims to convert to Islam.

However, this is not true, given the fact that the reports (below) tell us that he was sent to preach to them about the religion of Islam. In-fact, Prophet Muhammed (p) clearly told Ali not to fight them, unless they fought and attacked the Muslims first.

    Historical reports

    Waqidi:

“THE EXPEDITION OF ALI B. ABI TALIB TO YEMEN

They said: The Messenger of God sent Ali during Ramadan in the year ten AH. The Messenger of God commanded him to camp in Quba, so Ali camped there until his companions arrived. At that time the Messenger of God offered Ali a turban, which he folded in four and fixed on the top of his spear, for a banner and handed it to him. He said, ‘This is the banner.’ He draped a turban, rolled thrice, on Ali, placing an arm length between his hand and a span length on his back, saying, ‘This is the turban!’ He said: Usama B. Zayd related to me from his father from Ata b. Yasar from Abu Rafi, who said: When the Messenger of God faced him, he said, ‘Depart and do not turn back.’ Ali said, ‘O Messenger of God, what shall I do?’ The Prophet said, ‘When you alight in their courtyard, do not fight them until they fight you; if they attack you, do not fight them until they kill one of you. If they kill one of you, do not fight them or blame them, but show them patience. Say to them, ‘Will you say that there is but one God?’ And if they say, ‘Yes,’ say, ‘Will you pray?’ And if they say ‘Yes,’ say, ‘Will you take from your property and give charity to your poor?’ And if they say ‘Yes,’ do not desire anything else. By God, may God guide a man by your hand…'” [1]

    Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir – Ibn sa’d:

“They (narrators) said: The Apostle of Allah, sent Ali to al-Yaman and prepared a banner for him. He put the turban on his head with his own hand, and said: Go and do not pay attention to anything. When you reach there, do not fight them (Yamanites) until they fight you. He set out with three hundred horsemen, and it was the first cavalry detachment that ever reached that region, which was the territory of Madhhij. …” [2]

    Resit Haylamaz:

“The farewell Hajj was the first and only hajj performed by the Messenger of God. It was during the Hajj that he bid the farewell to his followers (Ummah). At the time, Ali was not in Mecca. The Noble Messenger had sent him to Yemen to invite the people of Yemen to Islam. One by one, Ali visited people in their homes to convey the message. His only desire was to plant the love of God in their hearts. As soon as he heard about the Prophet’s farewell Hajj, he left Yemen for Mecca. …” [3]
